Logic, why don't you ever use it?

Hi there,

Logic is possibly one of the most critical tools you will ever need to make your way in this life.

You will all know this saying :

"If something seems too good to be true then it is too good to be true." IE. It's bullshit. You've heard that haven't you? Yet most of what humans do is continually try to oppose that truism and get "something for nothing." I'll win the lottery. Yes, that watch worth $10,1000 was very cheap when the guy sold it to me for $10.

Yes, this used car looks perfect and is guaranteed for a whole three months. I don't know what it's guaranteed to do, but there is a guarantee. Sucker. It could be guaranteed to break down if you don't read the entire contract.

People say to you "Trust me, this is a good deal". So you do trust them, buy and find out later it was a bad deal.

All you need to do in most cases is simply apply a test of logic and you will know the truth.

Is this cheap car likely to be a good buy, at a good price? Logic says no, so you don't buy it.

This man said to trust him when he was selling me a watch worth thousands for $10. Logic says that's bullshit.

If you get married and swear to some vows and so does your intended partner, is it likely that either of you will abide by every single vow for the rest of your life? Logic says a BIG NO. No need to go into the nasty side of these vows to see they are lies. The cherish, accept and honour part is enough space for all of you to fail those vows. Logic tells you that. Will this person stay with me if I become very ill and become incapable of earning an income? Logic say, probably NOT although some may try. They WILL give up after a while as the strain is too much.

Everything in your life is like that. Use the logic test and see if the result you want is likely or not.

I'm going to bet on every race today. Is it likely I will back every winner. Logic says "No fucking way". SO you restrict which ones you bet on, if you must bet.

Someone tries to hold you up. They have a gun aimed at you. What does logic tell you? Simple, they are more likely to shoot you or kill you than not so you should concede. Go ahead and attack them if you think that's logical way to go. It isn't and you will probably die but you might just call a bluff. Might. Logic says, don't try anything.

Are you able to live by the calls of your religious beliefs? Logic says absolutely not. Even Jesus showed anger. So will you. It's illogical to say you never will break even one command or belief. Do you accept all others and love them without fear or favour. No fucking way. You will apply all the biases you hold to make that untrue. Logic says so.

In truth you really only need one rule to live by. Logic. Try it and see how you go. Is it likely your teenager will do exactly what they tell you they will do overnight while sleeping over? No fucking way. Wake up and smell the lies. Use logic.
