Hi there,
I could and will say that I was never disappointed in Ritchie's commentary. He had it down pat and must have either fumed or laughed himself silly at the antics of other commentators. I only heard him play in the 61 tied Test vs the Windies.
For example? DR IAN HEALY who can apparently diagnose any injury within 5 seconds of it apparently occurring. Why does he not pass his genius on to the medical profession one wonders? This man has never met a silence he cannot fill with total dribble. And no, he was NOT the best wicket keeper we've had. He ranks among the bottom few. He's just lucky to have been in a side that boasted Warne, McGrath, Punter and Steve Waugh.
And please don't even try to compare the vomit that June Waugh and Pleghm Fleming try to pass off as commentary. They only ever talk about themselves and they seem to become better ex players than they ever were. Don't forget June was caught passing team, pitch and weather details to certain bookmakers. Julio's Boolio's.
No, Ritchie was in a class of his own and it is only yesterday I heard a recording of why he was so far ahead. He said that, when starting out, he was advised by a couple of experienced people to NOT fill silences just because nothing is happening. He also was apparently the ONLY commentator in Australia who ever realised one small detail.
That is that everyone with a TV can see what he sees and possibly more so he did not find a need to repeat what we saw as all the other halfwits do.
