Did you watch the 1976 Australian Open Men's tennis title?

Hi there,

Well of course most of you didn't as you weren't even alive then.

I watched it and it was the best game of tennis I've ever seen.

It was between John Newcombe, favourite by a mile and a prolific winner of big titles over a period of years, and a man named Mark Edmondson, ranked 212 in the world at that time.

It was unbelievebale. Newcombe won the first set in a tie break 7 - 6.

After that it was a long, long match and Edo, as he came to be known, won the next 3 sets 6 - 3, 7 - 6, 6 - 1.and the Australia Grand Slam Title. He only ever won that one Grand Slam and although he was around for years he never reached th\at level of play again.

To me it's incredible how someone can play a game or produce a performance so far above their previous best ever and go on to win a championship. It happens more often than we think but look this one up. You'll love it. These days it's rare anyone outside the top 10 win anything.

Revel in the write up of that game, it was more exciting than words can ever make it.
