Hi Y'all,

Have you ever loved a song but never really had a clue what it was about. Or never considered the implications of the lyrics.

Of course many songs really just stick words in to fit the music and what it means is irrelevant. Who really gives a shit what it "means" if you like how it sounds or can sing along?

Have a look at this song for instance:

Two good old songs, yes? I think so but let's just look at a line or two and see what we can make of it.

Song one - My Boyfriend's Back

The first things the song says is her boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble.

WHY?

Well, she claims you've been spreading lies that she's been untrue. Really? If the boyfriend's gone how can she be untrue. She would have caused the problem and of course, she didn't have to cooperate with any new guy now did she.

Doesn't matter as her boyfriend's back, he's kinda tall and awful strong, and he's comin' after you. Really?

He's coming to "save her reputation". Oh right, one rumour and her reputation is shot huh. I suspect she has been playing the field, to be mild and she's now faking it because her boyfriend's back and HE IS kinda big and awful strong. She don't want to get on his bad side so she'll badmouth everyone to save herself, right?


I think we know what that song was actually about don't we?


Song Two. "Who put the bomp?"

Well, this song is very clever in fact. Despite all the doo wops etc. and bam a lam a ding dangs, it's a LOVE song.

These lines shows that:

"Who was that man?

I'd like to shake his hand

He made my baby

Fall in love with me (yeah!!)"

Yeah, it's a love song.
