Girls and boys

Hi Y'all again,

A tale from the last year of my high school experience in Canberra. Deakin High School it was.

I didn't chase girls, ever. They always seemed to just arrive and they were suddenly my girlfriend, or something of that nature.

Two tales actually. This first one, a girl by the name of Dianne arrived and we hung out together a bit. If any of you have ever seen a comedian by the name of Dov Davidos you'll like this one. At that age I didn't have money so we just used to go out walking really. We did go to a concert in near the city once. I got dropped off and so did she. It was Crispian St Peters. "The Pied Piper" was his big hit. Don't sneer, Canberra didn't get anyone from overseas that often back then and he was BIG world wide for 5 minutes.

Anyways, her father picked her up, but not me. Hell, I liked walking anyway so I did, all the way home. Bloody late when I got there.

So another weekend day I go pick her up from her home and we go walking, around the suburb. That's where Dov is relevant. He had no money and when his girl asked him, where they were going he just said "Further".

And we did, go further. Then she suddenly went white and collapsed. Shit, what to do? I sat with her for a few minutes and she wasn't really coming round so I helped her to stand and then half carried, half walked her home. Got to her front door and knocked. Father answered the door and shouted "What's wrong with her?". I didn't get a chance to answer. Mum appeared, panic stricken and they whisked her away and left me standing there. So, after a while, I left. What was I gonna do.  Grow roots?

So I saw her at school the next week but we didn't talk. I went over to see her on the next Saturday and was greeted and invited in as she had answered the door. Upon entering Daddy got up and shouted at me "What's wrong with you? You bring our girl home and just take off?"

I replied "Excuse me? I brought her home to make sure she was looked after and I did NOT just take off. I waited at the door and finally left as neither of you came back to say anything at all".

He seemed a bit shocked that I had answered him and he just slumped back into his arm chair. Dianne came back and held my hand. We sat down and had a drink, cokes each.

We chatted a bit about nothing much then she said "Would you like to see something special?" My mind starting racing. Her parents were there!. She leaned close and said "Do you want to see my glory box?". Hell I sure did but wasn't keen with parents watching. She pulled me up by hand and walked me over to the corner of the lounge room and said "There it is". I looked at her, puzzled. She had me looking at what seemed to be a chest of some sort.  She said "That's my glory box." Lots of household items filled the box. I'd heard of this. Parents gave girls gifts for their marriage so she wouldn't be unprepared when the time she married came around. I was scared.

Looking at it and her I heard a shrill voice in my head. It was shouting "Run, boy run". LOUD. So I did, I was 17 for fuck's sake. Never went out with her again and she never talked to me again. How to frighten a young man to death!!

Second tale coming next post OK.
